More seating, more stages at Folkie
EXTRA banks of fixed seating will be installed in the main venues at next month’s Port Fairy Folk Festival.
The famous Folkie chair will take more of a back seat as construction crews aim to increase the capacity at some stages.
Folk Festival construction crew leader Jack Smits said his 120-strong team was working on two seating projects.
He said the children’s venue would be relocated to the basketball stadium and the area used to become another stage.
“The stadium will be the children’s venue during the day and be a stage at night,” Mr Smits said.
He said the former children’s venue would become the sixth stage at the Southcombe Park site and would feature fixed seating for about 500 people.
“And there was some fixed seating in stage three last year and that will be increased this year. We are trying the increased fixed seating this year to see how it works and we think it will allow us to increase the capacity of seating in our venues.”
The construction crew has also come up with a solution for patrons looking to offload their Folkie seats when not using them.
Mr Smits said a “great wall” of chairs would be erected near the festival entrance where patrons could hang their chairs when not in use. He said people would need to bring a lock to secure their seats.
