WAGGA LOCAL COURT
A MAN who inflicted a six-month reign of violent terror on his partner has appealed against a jail sentence imposed in Wagga Local Court this week.
A court non-publication order protecting the identity of the victim prevents publication of the name of the 30-year-old man, who no longer lives in Wagga.
Police facts tendered to the court revealed that between April 1 and September 23 last year the man:
–Pinned his partner against a wall and bit her hard on the face, causing bruising;
–Bit her on the upper left arm so hard it drew blood then gave a “sadistic giggle”;
–Emptied the contents of a garbage bin over her when she declined to go out for breakfast because she was saving up to buy a house;
–Spat in her face.
On other occasions, the man threw the woman on the ground, slapped her buttocks so hard it left red marks and shoulder charged her.
According to the facts, just after the man poured garbage over the woman he suggested they go out for coffee.
When the woman declined, the man said: “Fine, bitch, get in the kitchen and make me some breakfast”.
The woman refused the demand.
“The accused stormed over to the victim, grabbed her by the back of the hair and tried to drag her to the kitchen,” the facts said.
“The accused also grabbed the victim by the hand.”
The woman retaliated by slapping her partner.
Police were made aware of the violent relationship that day and later charged the man with three counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, five counts of common assault and one count of damaging the woman’s laptop computer.
He pleaded guilty to all charges.
Magistrate Megan Greenwood this week sentenced the man to 15 months’ jail, with a non-parole period of six months.
She later granted the man bail after he lodged a severity appeal that will be heard in the District Court next month.
Bail conditions include he forfeit $2000 if he does not appear in court, that he surrender his passport and that he not approach any point of international departure.
